Marca 2017: the fair for private labels continues to grow. Positive results: increased numbers of exhibitors, buyers and visitors

Today in Bologna the 13th Report on Private Labels was presented: revenues (+1.5%) and market share (+18.6%) show positive growth again.

Positive results for “Marca 2017”, the international exhibition for private label products that concluded today at the Bologna Exhibition Centre. This event for private labels, in its 13th edition, is organized by BolognaFiere in collaboration with ADM. From the early indications it appears that the event registered important signs of growth compared with last year’s edition. The three new pavilions and the large conference hall were packed with Italian and international operators and professionals. There was also a greater number of co-packer companies exhibiting from all over Italy (615 companies, +16% compared with 2016) and an increase in the total exhibition space (29 thousand m2, +12%). Also at the fair with their stands were the 20 leading distribution groups involved in grocery retail, coordinated by ADM. There was also an increased international presence with a large number of foreign buyers and official delegations from more than 30 countries around the world and involved in B2B meetings with Italian companies interested in exporting their food and non-food products to foreign markets.

“Marca opened the programme of events at our exhibition centre and also this year, it opened in some style,” explained Antonio Bruzzone, director general of BolognaFiere. “This demonstrates the success of this event for private labels, the second largest of its kind in Europe and among the leading events in the world, in addition to the wealth of exhibitions that BolognaFiere has to offer. This year too Marca registered excellent results and confirmed its role as a great business opportunity with important participation both from Italy and abroad, all
in search of new business opportunities”.

“Marca underlined its status as an unmissable event for the world of business, both in production and distribution, that concerns private labels,” underlined president of AGM, Giorgio Santambrogio. “It is an event that invites participants to reflect on the success that has led private labels to assume a genuine role as brands in their own right that have won over consumers. Such an evolution can be summed up by the transformation from ‘private labels’ to distributor brands: if previously these commercial brands expressed only an opportunity to save money now they identify a world of values, variety and innovation that has carved out a new space and a leading role within the landscape of mass consumption.

On the occasion of “Marca 2017”, the “13th Marca Report on the evolution of private label products in Italy” was presented. The report was put together by Adem Lab – University of Parma, based on research commissioned by IRI. The report highlights the increase in revenues generated by private labels in 2016 of +1.5% in value and +1% in volume compared with the same period in 2015, reaching a market share of 18.6%. In November the revenues of the hypermarket channels, supermarkets and free service reached a total of 9.78 billion euros. The research also shed light on the fact that consumers are purchasing an increasing quantity of private labels products in the premium and high quality segments: the growth in revenues of this segment, which in the first 11 months of 2016 has reached 1.35 billion euros, was driven by the organic products and premium produce (+15.3% in value on average for the two segments). At the conclusion of “Marca 2017” the announcement was also made that the 2018 edition of the event is due to take place on the 17th and 18th January in Bologna.
